How to Choose the Best Pilates Teacher Training Program

How to Choose the Best Pilates Teacher Training Program?

There are several options available for completing a Pilates Teacher Training program. These include comprehensive 600 hour classical programs, newer approaches often called “contemporary”, weekend fitness-based Pilates programs, and modular programs.

What is Contemporary Pilates?

Contemporary Pilates is a modern interpretation of the original Pilates method developed by Joseph Pilates. It merges traditional exercises with new movements and techniques, utilizing newly designed reformers equipped with colored springs, risers, and ropes in various settings. Additionally, it incorporates elements from other fitness practices. **It’s important to note that contemporary Pilates programs can vary significantly from one studio or franchise to another**.

What is Classical Pilates?

Classical Pilates Upholds Tradition

Classical Pilates emphasizes the importance of adhering to the original exercises and sequencing established by Joseph Pilates, as well as utilizing the equipment he developed. This methodology underscores a comprehensive understanding of the human musculoskeletal system and seeks to provide a personalized workout that engages both the body and mind. It is designed to minimize the risk of strain and injury while meticulously following the foundational principles taught by Joseph Pilates.

How can you determine if you are learning Classical Pilates?

It all comes down to Lineage.

  • Mr. Pilates’s method was passed down to a select group of teachers known as the Elders. Romana Kryzanowska, his primary protégé, continued his work in New York City and developed the first informal teacher training program for Pilates in the late 80s. The teachers trained by Ms. Kryzanowska and the other Elders are considered second-generation teachers.
  • Maintaining this lineage is crucial as it helps practitioners understand the origins of the work and connect directly with Mr. Pilates through second-generation teachers.
  • A comprehensive classical Pilates program taught by a first—or second-generation instructors typically consists of at least 600 hours of training. This ensures a consistent and detailed curriculum, guaranteeing that your training and certification are recognized worldwide.

Will I find work after completing the Pilates Teacher Training Program?

Yes, there are job opportunities in both classical and contemporary studio settings. You can earn money on both platforms, even through weekend seminars. Additionally, you can find work opportunities globally, as plenty of options are available and plenty of clients to go around.

How do you choose a Pilates Teacher Training Program with so many programs on the market and everyone claims to be the best?

Navigating the numerous studios that offer Pilates Certification Programs can be quite challenging. Due to the lack of regulation within the Pilates industry, these Teacher Training Programs can differ significantly in their quality and structure.

The primary consideration is that the value of your Pilates Certification—granted upon successful completion of a Teacher Training Program—is intrinsically linked to the quality of education you receive throughout that program. A comprehensive and rigorous educational experience is essential for developing the skills and knowledge necessary to be an effective Pilates instructor.

Private Pilates

The Pilates Teacher Certification program you pursue must incorporate both written and practical assessments. These evaluation methods ensure that you possess a well-rounded understanding of Pilates principles as well as the ability to apply these concepts in practice. Selecting a program that emphasizes thorough assessment will better prepare you for a successful career in instruction.

Difference between Comprehensive and Modular Pilates instructor certification.

Key Aspects of a Comprehensive Classical Pilates Curriculum:

A comprehensive classical Pilates certification is about ten times more expensive than one that only includes mat work or a limited selection of apparatus, such as just the reformer, Cadillac, mat, and Wunda chairs.

To truly understand the entire “system,” you need experience with all the apparatus: reformer, Cadillac, Wunda chair, electric chair, armchair, small barrel, spine corrector, ladder barrel, Ped-O-Pul, guillotine, and Swedish bars. Additionally, you should be familiar with ancillary pieces such as the magic circle, neck stretcher, foot corrector, toe tensometer, airplane boards, 2×4, breath-a-cizor, hand weights, and wall work.

Key Aspects of a Modular Contemporary Pilates Teacher Training Program:

A modular Pilates program is multiple Pilates certification courses divided into levels and modules. Students can progress through the program at their own pace. They can choose to focus on reformer training, mat training, or special components independently.

Modular courses require a smaller investment, allowing you to pay as you go.

Investment in Comprehensive Pilates Certification

While the cost difference may deter some potential instructors from committing to a 600-hour classical comprehensive program, it’s important to recognize that this decision represents a significant investment in your future career. Comprehensive training not only equips you with essential skills and knowledge but also enhances your credibility and marketability in the field. By prioritizing this educational opportunity, you are laying a strong foundation for your professional growth, which can lead to greater job opportunities and earning potential in the long run.

Reputable programs mandate a minimum of 600 training hours, which must include student teaching, direct practice, academics, and extensive testing. The seminars are usually conducted over several months and should be accredited by the Pilates Method Alliance or another nationally or internationally recognized association.

Time and Staying Motivated in Your Comprehensive Program

Pursuing a classical Pilates certification requires a substantial commitment of time and energy. Most comprehensive training programs last 7 to 12 months, during which participants are expected to engage in 18 to 22 hours of studio training each week. Your training should combine practical instruction, lessons, academic coursework, personal practice, and observations of experienced practitioners.

While the time commitment may initially seem significant, many programs are designed to provide flexibility to accommodate students’ diverse schedules. Such flexibility enables individuals to effectively balance their training with personal and professional obligations.

Establishing clear, achievable goals and recognizing and celebrating incremental progress is essential to maintaining motivation throughout this rigorous process. Engaging with peers and participating in collaborative discussions within your program’s apprentice community to further enhance motivation and enrich the overall learning experience.

The Bottom Line

A comprehensive classical certification significantly enhances your attractiveness in the marketplace. You are not only trained in the reformer but are also knowledgeable about all the apparatuses and the system. Classical instructors are in higher demand because there are fewer programs and limited slots available in these programs.
